A look into Maryland Terps’ Stephon Heyer

In 2007, Stephon Heyer first appeared in the professional football scene as an offensive tackle for the Washington Redskins. After having played in four seasons for the Redskins, Heyer will be playing for the Oakland Raiders in this year’s 92nd regular season of the National Football League (NFL).

Heyer began his football career at Brookwood High School in Snellville, Georgia. He lettered twice and helped Brookwood bag a 5-5 record in 2001. His remarkable performance attracted the attention of many scouts. Soon enough, Heyer received several scholarship offers from prestigious universities, including Michigan, Georgia, Arkansas, Clemson, Florida, Alabama, Ohio State, Kentucky, Vanderbilt, and Auburn. However, he turned them down to join University of Maryland’s Terrapins in 2002.

As a freshman, Heyer only started one out of 13 games. The following year, he appeared and started all 13 games, finishing the season with only two penalties and ranking as the Terps’ second highest rating offensive lineman. During his junior year, he played and started 11 games as left tackle and finished the season as the Terps highest-rated lineman. Unfortunately, he was redshirted during the 2005 season due to a knee injury. After his recovery, he appeared in the Champs Sports Bowl. His performance earned him a spot in ESPN.com’s All-Bowl team. In 2006, Heyer returned in the college football scene playing and starting all 13 games. That same year, he earned an honorable mention as an All-ACC lineman. By the end of his last season, Heyer had appeared in a total of 50 games, starting 37 as left tackle. Heyer finished his collegiate career playing at the Hula Bowl and signing up as an undrafted free agent for the Washington Redskins.
